Kicking It Old School

Carmen-Electra-carmen-electra-687885_1024_768When I first started playing MMO’s it was with a little game called Dark Ages of Camelot. I played a healing Cleric mostly, but I had an stealthy Infiltrator as well that I loved.  I use to take keeps, heal as my team mates battered down doors, and crush opposing players.

Fast forward 10+ years I’m doing the same thing in Guild Wars 2, and I’m loving. Oh sure I’m not healing this time around. I’m playing a burly twin axe, death dealing Warrior (Thinking of trying axe, and mace).  It’s great I’m only 25, but I’m helping out with the WvW.

Guild Wars 2 took some things awesome from DAOC, and some things from Warhammer Online (Except no Chaos. but meh) and made it their own.  The only thing I miss is climbing walls, and ganking clothies in keeps, then running the hell out of there.  I’m still having fun in GW2, and they won me over for now…we’ll see what happens at 80, when I’m all grown up.

For now the grind, and my march to 80 continues.

Let Them Hate Us, As Long As They Fear Us

Posted in MMORPG with tags , , , on October 16, 2012 by theerivs

When I first started playing WoW, we didn’t have BG’s, or Honor Points. We had pride, and old school world PvP. We would fight for hours either at the Crossroads in the Barrens, or the battlefield that was Tarren Mill/Southshore. We did it for fun, and pride and that’s all we needed. I remember my guild was so hated, they made hate posts on the forum about us. Let them hate us, as long as they fear us.

So when I heard World PvP was making a return to WoW, I was excited but I haven’t heard anything about it, and I was getting a little down. Until today, seems like in Patch 5.1 things are going to make a change..for the better.

From the 5.1 Patch Notes –

The Pandaren Campaign begins!

  • The conflict between the Horde and the Alliance has ignited a new series of daily quests along the shore of the Krasarang Wilds.
  • Players can visit their faction strongholds in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms to begin the quest to summon their war fleets to the continent of Pandaria. (Please note: The Alliance version of this quest is not yet complete, but will still unlock the new missions and features).
  • Players will both valiantly defend their faction’s outpost and assault the opposing faction’s headquarters.
  • Two new Reputations have been added: Alliance players can earn reputation with Operation: Shieldwall, while Horde players will curry favor with the Dominance Offensive.
  • Players can slay rival NPCs and opposing faction players along the shore to earn commissions that can be spent to upgrade their faction’s base.
  • Look for strategic objectives to capture, including graveyards and towers. Commissions can be spent to recruit guards that will help protect this captured territory!
  • Players who are truly dedicated to their faction can spend their commissions on an item that will give their fellows an extra reputation group quest for the day. Horde players can speak with Ongrom Black Tooth, while Alliance players can contact Proveditor Grantley for details

This makes me so excited that I can’t wait to kill me some Thrall Alliance scum….

I found this interesting as well, and wonder how this will work.

Brawler’s Guild

  • Underground fighting rings have sprung up in Stormwind and Orgrimmar that will give brawlers a chance to earn bragging rights by testing their solo PvE mettle against some of the toughest creatures found in World of Warcraft.
  • Players will prove their skill, and increase their rank with the Brawler’s Guild, as they win matches against some of the most difficult solo encounters in World of Warcraft.
  • As their Brawler’s Guild rank increases, players will unlock additional rewards and activities within the Brawler’s Guild.
  • Brawlers on a realm will gather together into the blood spattered ring to watch as their peers face down their own opponents. They can watch the battles in progress to learn from hardened Brawler’s Guild veterans as they wait for their own turn to fight.
  • If this is your first night at Brawler’s Guild, you have to fight.

Some exciting changes coming from Blizz, and WoW. I can’t wait for some more hate posts.

Old Skool

So last night me and couple guildies had some Old Skool fun.

First a hunter, and my pally went to ZG to try for the mounts. No luck there, but it’s sad just how powerful the Pally class is, my mage would never be able to take the beating that my pally takes. My partner left, and I passed the serpent boss, I was like what the hell. I rocked his world, and made bout 20 gold for 5 seconds work.

Then I got on the mage, and the hunter, and a pally came along and we did AQ20. Man that brought back some memories. Man some of those bosses still hit like a asston, like Buru , holy crap.  If you kite him around though and hit the eggs, he ain’t that bad.  Found this little guide if you want to solo it…. The gold to time put in ratio isn’t that good, so I won’t be back. I got my Achievement..I’m done there.

Then we went to BWL….I spent most of my later time of Vanilla in here. Like 4-5 days a week for over a year. Man it brought back some memories. The strats involved with this you can’t really solo, not that I know how. We went with Pally-Healer, Bear-Tank, Me- Awesome Mage, and a Hunter.

Razorgore - We tried to just kill him, and be done with it…You can’t. After we killed them we all just suddenly died, you should have heard vent. We were like WTF??? You have to kill all the eggs first.  Also I don’t know if it’s a bug, or what but after we killed Razogore the mobs that spawn just kept coming, and coming…Think there is a certain number of them you do have to destroy.

Vael the Corrupt - Straight DPS fight, I went Arcane, (I usually run around in my Frost spec, and only raid as Arcane). Death happens, Vael puts a buff on you, and the end you automatically die when it ends, so if you go with not many people your screwed.  This fight is an Arcane Mages wet dream. Then he slaps on the buff, it gets better. You can cast almost instantly, and no worry about mana. Just make sure you ice block before you die, cause I forgot…and I don’t even know if Iceblock will get rid of the buff…it should.

We had to call it here cause it was getting late. It was really cool to take another look at these places. Not to mention in BWL, for four people we got 40+ gold for each boss…not bad at all.

I love just having some fun with guildies, doing old content, and remembering old time. Here’s something really Old School, a little Rapwing Lair

By Fire Be Purged

Little Back Story, I had 2 accounts at one time. I now only have one. I use to have two mages, one Human mage and  one Forsaken Mage. Well today I’m down to one account, with my Horde Mage being my main. My Forsaken Mage really just leveled fast, cause I played Warrior Tank back in the day. So my Forsaken Mage never saw MC, or BWL.

A couple days ago I got a hankering to go see some old content. Well there was a BWL raid going on, that was full of fail. While in Blackrock I decided to get attuned in Molten Core, by the way the shortcut in BRD was way easier with Frost Shields.

Last night a guildie was in Molten Core. I asked him what’s going on in there. He said just duoing with an friend, he asked me if I wanted to join. So it was the 3 of us, a Pallie, a Rogue, and Me. I hopped on Vent. We developed little strats to take these bosses. We got to about Shazzrah when we realized we didn’t have Water from the Hydraxxian Overlords. None of use even had that much rep with them. We just kept going though, talking about old time in Molten Core. Sharing memories of past loot, or stories of difficulties we faced with the bosses.

Well when was time to kill Majordomo, since we thought we needed the water, I just wanted to see if he was there…He was. We must not need the water no more. Thank god cause I didn’t want to make a trip to Azshara in the middle of nowhere, though as a mage it wouldn’t be as bad. So we killed Majordomo, and faced Ragnaros.

Ragnaros is still epic, I still get excited seeing him pop out of the lava, and hear him bellow. “By Fire Be Purged!”  Our tank Rogue died, and it was just me casting Frostbolts like it was going out of style, and our Pallie healing me. The Sons of Ragnaros never popped, I wonder if they still do.

Well we downed him, I got my acheivement, got some gold, bout 15g+ drops off these bosses plus loot, and it was great fun, probably more fun then some regular runs. A little challenging still, but the guys I was with were funny too. I was disappointed though….No Vendorstrike.

Have you gone back into old content? Still have the same feelings for it? Nostalgia, or was it lame?

Next week I’m going to see if I can get a Blackwing Lair run.  Tomorrow Bee is up, and I’m sure she’s gonna rock out with her cock out..if she had a cock that is.

Old School

Gnomey was talking Gatekeepers, and others around the blogosphere are talking Immersion, or the lack there of.

It had me thinking, was WoW tougher back when it first started?  Has the Old School Guard gone away?  Am I a dinosaur in the WoW Landscape?

Back in the day we had 40 man raids, and guilds filled with 100′s of people. We had to tell people they couldn’t go. These days the guilds I’ve been in have trouble scrapping together a 25 man raid. Yes 40 man raid’s were a logistic nightmare, but when things went well. It was awesome thing. I would be chatting with our guilds mages 5 or 6 of them cracking jokes in mage chat. I would look around and see 39 other people raiding at the same time, making sure I did my part to not let them down.

It wasn’t about the purple pixels, damage meters, or your gear score. You got rewards if you showed up and performed, and stayed, called dkp, this dkp got you loot. There would be several runs I never got a piece of gear. It was ok, cause it was all for the Guild.

In MMO’s in general as I flitter from MMO to MMO, I see a scary trend. That it’s not about crafting a cool world to dwell in, but to make sure there is action all around you, and you get bigger and shiner loot for every step you make. In Warhammer Online, it was Scenarios, all the time….In Age of Conan everything was so instanced it was sick.  Sometimes the things I like the most were the little things in WoW, the attention to detail that made the World of Warcraft alive. The Ogres dancing by themselves, the paintings on the wall in Scarlet Monastary, the conversations between mobs when your eavesdropping, cool little things. Like Neo in the Matrix, things that made you stop the roses and go…Whoa.
