20 Days of Blogging

Posted in MMORPG, Writing with tags , on February 27, 2012 by theerivs

First off I apologize for No Weekly Lagout last week, I’ve been really busy.  I do want to give some High Latency Love to Martha for this, and Navimie for this…simply impressive

I found this interesting…Saga at Spellbound issued a 20 day challenge for WoW bloggers, and Morrigu is in it too. But I don’t do just WoW so I changed it up a bit because I want to expand on it. So the next 20 days I’ll be doing this….

 Day 01 – Introduce yourself
Day 02 – Why you decided to start a blog
Day 03 – Your first day playing WoW/MMO
Day 04 – Your best gaming memories
Day 05 – Favourite item(s) in game
Day 06 – Your workplace/desk (photo and/or description)
Day 07 – The reason behind your blog’s name
Day 08 – 10 things we don’t know about you
Day 09 – Your first blog post
Day 10 – Blog/Website favourites
Day 11 – Bad habits and flaws
Day 12 – A usual day in your life/online time
Day 13 – People (players/bloggers) that you admire
Day 14 – This upsets you
Day 15 – Your desktop background (on your computer) and why you chose it
Day 16 – Things you miss about certain games from your past?
Day 17 – Your favourite spot (in game or outside it)?
Day 18 – Your favourite outfit?
Day 19 – In your bags/bank?
Day 20 – If this was your last day gaming, what would you do?

I’ll post my first post later today.

Why Do I Blog?

Posted in Writing with tags , on January 23, 2012 by theerivs

Scary laments about his skills, and the whatfors of his blogging. It had me thinking why do I blog. I mean I suck at writing, I am not that well informed, I couldn’t min-max a stat to save a life.  Compared to some of those bloggers on his list, I am a flea on the blogospheres ass.

So why am I here….why do I waste my time, and possibly yours. I think it’s time for a list, cause the Internet loves a list.

1. It’s a hobby – People don’t build models of airplanes because they are going to show them off in competition with each other for the most part. People build model airplanes to reduce stress, to take a step back from life, and do something they enjoy.  I don’t take this overtly serious, it’s just something I do when I have time.

2. I enjoy writing – Even though I suck at it,  I enjoy doing it. I like to play chess too, and I suck at that as well. It takes me about 10 minutes to write a post, just imagine if I actually put effort into this.

3. Part of something – Even though I am a small shadowy corner of the blogosphere, I feel I am a part of it.

4. Camaraderie – I feel without blogging, I wouldn’t of met so many interesting people, and keep meeting them.

5. Bad Boy – I got this reputation among the blogosphere as a little bit rough around the edges bad boy, and I feel I have a niche to fill. Way to many good guys out there, someone has to be an asshole, and I am that man.

Hi my name is River, Who the hell are you?

Posted in Writing with tags , on January 19, 2012 by theerivs

So I like to gander who is coming to my website, and from where once in awhile, and once in a while I come up with some strange site or another. Here’s the most recent strangness. Some Forums put a link to me from their site. I don’t even know why cause it’s all in a different language. I think it’s some sort of Russian.

This is what they said about me.

tak ještě k tomu mágovi neni to na wowko ale jen for fun ale chtěl bych něco jako chaotic (scoopy): něco z netu třeba tohle: akorát male :D ale i tak díky za snahu

I have no clue what they are saying, are they saying I suck and want to kill me, or are they saying I am so awesome they want their hot women to marry me.

It boggles my mind sometimes this wonderful thing we call the internet, and then there are those greedy mongers who want to stiffle it. Here’s the thing is they are going back to 2009, if they can go back to find something so can the SOPA/PIPA people, but some good news on that front alot of politicians who were backing it, have removed their support…but I digress.

The Art of War

Sun Tsu once said, “You wait by the river long enough the body of your enemy will float by”

I am not a Moral Philosopher, as you know.

Posted in MMORPG with tags , , on January 24, 2011 by theerivs

There was a short-lived sitcom in the nineties called “Men behaving Badly” in the US which was derived from an English Sitcom which ran longer. I believe it was ahead of its time. There was one segment where Rob Schneider is posed a dilemma, and he replies, “Well I’m not a Moral Philosopher as you know.”

Tobold’s recent thoughts about MoralityFreedom of Choice,  and Blogging Standards have me thinking. Let’s start at the beginning with Morality.

I am not a Moral Philosopher, but I play games for the most selfish reasons, I derive pleasure from it. I get some fix to my cerebral cortex that I get when I interact with those little pixels. Hell if I was really a moral person shouldn’t I be building homes for the homeless, I am not saying we as gamers are immoral people, but to say that we should bring morals into play while gaming is kind of well absurd to me. We are playing a game where the point is to kill other things, is this not immoral in itself? When I PvP my objective is to crush my enemy, see them driven before me, and hear the lamentation of the women…not to play paddy-cake with them.

Do I tank because I have some moral obligation, no I tank because I enjoy it. If there is a shortage of tanks in a game, then the game developer must look at the why isn’t tanking fun. I got burned out of it because I was thrust in a leadership role all to often, and I was tired of being the “go-to” guy. So I made my mage, did that make me less of a team player, no I did my part as a team. I went back to tanking because I enjoy the challenge of it, and I am an attention whore.

I think viewing DPS as immoral because they are more fun to play, in a game where we are supposed to have fun playing is like saying it’s wrong to eat chocolate chip cookies, because they taste good.

Now with that said, Morality is not why we succeed, It’s greed and ambition. I want to get to the next level, the next gear, I want to destroy my objective, I want to crush the enemy. I can not do this alone, so I must form a team. For the sake of success, I must play a part of this team. I must grow this team to be killers. Thus we must have rules, or laws if you will.

We do not have freedom of choice if we want to succeed at something, If I want to be a bum, and waste my time under a street begging for change, I sure can do that, I have that freedom….but I like driving my new car with the tunes bumping, and a chick next to me hopefully rubbing something on me. In the most basic of games, Monopoly, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders there is no Freedom of Choice, you do prescribed action, you get prescribed result. Same with life, you do something, you have consequences. Freedom of choice is an illusion in games, as well as in life it doesn’t exist, and if you think it does then you are a diluted fool who views the world in rose-colored glasses. Your Freedom of choice goes as far as are you willing to pay the consequence for your action, if so…then have at it.

Blogging Standards, I have none. this is all my opinion, not fact, there is no source but my own twisted Lawful Evil mind.  A standard is an agreed upon way of doing things. Well this is my domain, and in my domain I make the laws. Thus the only standards I have to conform to are mine.

I blog for the chicks!

Ysharros over at Stylish Corpse wrote a post on why she blogs, and it gots me thinking.

Why the fuck do I blog?

I mean I don’t think what I have to say is that unique, or awesome. I’m not that informative,  I write like a 4th grader on crack rock, what the hell is this grammar everyone is talking about. Seriously I seen more interesting stories on the back of bathroom stall doors than what I post. .

So why do I blog?

I think it has to do with maybe not being breast fed, either that or I just like the idea of sharing ideas with my fellow gamers. That the greatest strength of the internet, besides the porn, is that we share our ideas, and ourselves without the barrier of race, creed, or any other stigma. We are truly all equal on the internet…

I love to entertain people, I admit I’m an attention whore. I love attention….not the bukkake type, that is Bee’s thing, and she hates competition.  Let’s face it nothing gets a chick out of her panties faster then telling her you’re a blogger, thus that’s why I blog.

You a blogger, why the hell do you blog?

Blogging Viagra

My buddy Scary, is having a bit of a problem. So I am here to help.

Yes summer sucks for MMO’s in general, there is usually not much movement as all the devs are hard at work for the fall, and christmas season push. I am not immune to it, lately I feel I’ve been spewing out pure unadulterated crap. Though tell you the truth I don’t care.

1. A Writer writes – I don’t know who said it, someone really famous, that writes. My goal is to keep writing, as long as something is coming from me.

2. Feel the flow – Lesser ideas as long as there is some flow, might spur me on to better ideas.  A path might lead me down something of greater value.

3. Toss enough shit against the wall, something is bound to stick - I don’t set out to write an opus everytime. Among the great writers there’s probably much more crap to their library then good stuff. That’s why a writer, writes cause with everything he writes he improves.

Ok well here’s the meat of my topic, some ideas for you if your having problems blogging. These are some of my go to’s

1. Back to the Future – A story of the past that somehow ties in with current events. A retro gaming story, or some event which formed your current gaming trends.

2. The  world loves a fool -  A story where you acted like a noob, fool, or a jackass.

3. Expand your horizons – Play something outside the box, perhaps an Iphone game..*looks at Scary* and write about that. There’s alot of games out there, and I can’t play them all.

4. Tips - Is there something you do, that might be good for you. It might be something you stumbled upon, or found out by yourself, and you want to share. I like to share and trade ideas and tips with others.

5. Show some love – Has someone been inspirational to. It always helps to get the word out on a fellow blogger.

6. Go to War - Hate to say it but when I go to war with some blog, or group my views increase. I guess people love conflict.

I try to post at least once a day, because I feel putting out a bunch of crap, is still better then nothing.  Well hope this helps some…

Unleashing the Chaos

Posted in Writing with tags , on July 13, 2010 by theerivs

Well as some of you may or may not know. I have a personal blog as well. I am starting a new project over there.  I want to open it up to other bloggers. I want to hear your stories of trials and tribulations, things you overcomed in your life, I want to hear something that pains you, personal, chaotic. Did you turn your life around? Is there something or someone deeply hurting you? Are you a game blogger who wants to write more, but doesn’t want to share on their game blog, because they are worried it doesn’t “belong”

I want you to release your chaos. If you have something you want to get off your chest, feel free to contact me at cc0926(at)gmail(dot)com

I am still master of that domain, but I’ll give you Author Privledges. No topic taboo, no format, no schedule, just post when you want. Hope you become part of my experiment, and we all learn something new together.

Should I tell My New Guild I Blog

Posted in MMORPG with tags on April 22, 2010 by theerivs

Thats a guildie who got drunk at my last guild get together. Yes it Says PVENES, We were both drunk

I was wondering should I tell my new Horde Guild that I blog. I’ve been toying with this idea, going back and forth. I never really blogged about the guilds I have been in except BoO, but we were a guild of Bloggers. I never use to call people out, unless you pissed the hell out of me.

Though the attention whore in me, wants the guild I am in to recognize my endeavours as a blogger as well.

Though tell you the truth, I’m like the unknown factor in this guild. Alot of them know each other, personally it seems. I try to join in chat, I really hadn’t had a chance to raid really. Here’s the problem I envision, if I’m not up front will they pissed at me later if I didn’t tell them.

I am an Attention Whore

Posted in MMORPG, Other Nerdy Pursuits, Writing with tags , on December 29, 2009 by theerivs

This is me hanging out with a couple of friends of mine. Yeah I'm a Ho!

Keredria from Tree of Life wants to know more about bloggers, and I thought I would oblige. Plus talking about myself is one of my favorite things to do, cause well I am an Attention Whore. Why do you think I play a Mage?

1. How long have you been blogging? What made you start? Who inspired you?

Well I started reading video game blogs some time ago such as Tobold, and Greedy Goblin.  I through my hat into blogging  just for myself on a personal blog, Chaotic Ramblings back in March of 2008. Then when Warhammer Online came out I thought it was a new game what a perfect time to get in on the ground floor, so Way of the Chosen came out.  I got the Blogging bug from an old friend of mine who sadly doesn’t blog as much as she used to, but here’s her blog.

2. About how many hours a week would you estimate you spend on your blog?

I’d say no more then 3-5 hours a week.

3. What kind of experience or background do you have with writing?
Writing is more of a hobby for me, Poetry, and short stories are more my fortay. By trade I’m a computer techie guy.

4. Talk about how you come up with blog topics. Where do you get your ideas? What or who inspires you? Where and/or how do your brainstorming?
Some days are rougher then others to come up with topics. I usually get my topics from actually playing, or another blogger scratches the surface of something, and I like to delve deeper into that topic. I like going places no one else wants or dares to go, from playing the devils advocate, to championing a cause no one wants to touch. I like making people step out of the box.

5. Do you have any blogging rules or guidelines you follow? Is there anything you will not blog about?

I have one rule. Only One penis per sexual encounter, and that penis is mine.  Other then that I don’t really have any rules or guidelines. Ok I do have one rule…Honesty. Honesty to the reader, and Honesty to self as well, when I’m wrong…I’m wrong. I am human. I don’t censor my comments, cause I love the asshats.  Well I do censor spam, cause really I don’t want to subject my readers to making their penis bigger. We all know my readers have the hugest penises in the gaming community.

6. Do you have any sort of a publishing schedule in terms of day of week or topic? Where do you do your writing?
I try to post once a day. My only reoccuring post on HLL is the Weekly Lagout which is like the week in review, and a peek at what’s coming up. I do most of my writing at work, cause as a techie, if everything is working right, I don’t have alot to do.

7. How many drafts of potential blog posts do you have right now? In what medium do you draft your posts? How often do you completely scratch or delete drafts or blog post ideas?
I don’t draft, I write from the hip like a gunslinger. Once in awhile I catch errors and correct them after I publish them. I feel that’s the best way for me. It’s more like I’m talking to my readers then writing to them. I liken it to, were at a bar and were talking about video games and MMO’s then me just sitting here writing the next opus of Video Game Blogosphere.

8. If you had to leave your blog in your will to another blogger, who would you choose? To ask this in a slightly less morbid way, are there other blogs that you feel are similar to yours in content, style, or voice?
No grave can hold me, I made pacts with the Dark Gods, and will attain Lichdom soon. But if I had to pick someone  no one person could replace me, but I would like to split up the duties. Shadow, and Arioch probably fit my writing style, funny, witty, and to the point. Not saying other bloggers aren’t awesome, but when I read their stuff it’s like hearing me talk. Which scares me cause Arioch is a chick, and I wonder what the effect of wearing a dress has on me from playing a Mage in WoW for 5 years has done to me.

9. Has anything surprised you since you started blogging?

Just the sense of community these bloggers have, I thought it was going to be me against the world when I first started, but everyone is so great. Also the topics when I’m thinking are so great, so insightful never get comments, and the stuff I write that I think is stupid gets the most attention. The masses they be fickle.

10. What are your goals or plans for your blog going forward? Any specific goals or plans for your blog in 2010?

Yes, I have some plans. HLL is poised to take over North America, I have cracked the launch codes, and am pointing the missiles at strategic sites right now.  Seriously though I’m a fly by the seat type of guy, I just hope to continue making people think, and entertain people at the same time. One of my goals I am really looking into is finding celebrities that play MMO’s and get their take on things. I find that topic interesting. Other then that 2010 is going to be an awesome year on the MMO path, with Star Trek, Star Wars, Maybe WoW: Cataclysm, and so much more.
