Discipline Priest PVP 4.0.1 Discussion
That’s right, I wanna have a disc about disc. This is probably the most “serious” WoW related post that you will ever see from me. I’m choosing to write about what I have seen PVP wise, what spec I’m currently using and how I’ve regemmed and reforged my gear. The reason i’m doing so is because I have not seen any other guides specifically related to Disc Healing in PVP since patch 4.0.1. I have seen people saying they are giving up on Disc and switching to Holy though, which makes me cry bubble tears.
First, I should say, if you are looking for some information on Disc Healing for PVE there are some amazing guides out there already (Tales of A Priest, Matticus). I have pretty much cookie-cutter copied the talent trees suggested here and they are working well for me.
Ok, now on to the PVP. Here is my current talent tree:
I am very happy with it so far. The only thing I’m thinking about changing up is the 2 points I have placed in reflective shield. With the ability to have fast holy fires and smites I may not need the damage from my shield absorption anymore. I always have loved this talent though, and it’s hard for me to give up. If I were going to move those 2 talent points elsewhere I think I would move them into the shadow tree for Darkness and get myself 2% more haste.
Another possibility would be placing 1 more talent point in Inner Sanctum and just putting 1 into Darkness.
Now, lets talk about gear.
Regemming has been pretty easy due to the fact that I have been updating most of my gear. In case you were not aware, you can obtain most of the wrathful gear now WITH NO ARENA RATING REQUIREMENT. I had (after conversions and whatnots) 5036 honor points when I logged in last Wednesday and was immediately able to turn those into my wrathful chest, legs, gloves and wand. My Resilience and Stamina have gone up tremendously. I currently have enough to purchase my mace and offhander as well. I’m going to be enchanting the mace with Black Magic. Well, at least for now – I’ll let you know how that works out for me. I’m now a dirty haste whore, so I’ll take it anywhere I can get it.
So what did I gem on my gear? Well, I’ve added some Spell Penetration along with some Hit Rating. I had very minimal Spell Pen before just to make sure my fears would hit properly. Now, with the necessity of my smites being as effective as possible I figured a little more wouldn’t hurt. Everything else is Intellect and Haste. I chose the Critical Strike based gear (Satin) and that is where I am getting any critical strike necessary, and for now, with no Mana problems that’s the way this will remain. I take spirit on my offset pieces of gear (bracers, neck, boots) and have left those alone. I reforged my Chest, Legs, Gloves and belt and reduced my critical strike rating for the sake of mastery. Mastery affects my bubbles, and I still love bubble spamming (even though I can’t with the speed I used to be able to), but when I do, I want them to be as powerful as possible. These stat choices are likely to change as we begin leveling in Cataclysm and things scale to new levels (81-85). For now though, its working great at level 80.
Glyph of Dispel Magic is fantastic right now. If I dispel myself (even without having a dispel-able debuff on me) it still gives me a small instant heal. I’m not sure if this is a bug and will be taken out with later patches and updates, but for now… loving that glyph and loving some nice insta-heals. You won’t see me opening a GM ticket to report this.
With all the extra straight healing I have been doing in Battlegrounds I am finally seeing myself near the top of the healing meters.
Disc is not as absorption based as it was. Smite causes direct heals, the Dispel Glyph causes instant direct heals, and of course we still have Penance, Flash Heal and Prayer of Mending. I do have a problem with the fact that 2 of the aforementioned spells do not let me choose who the benefactor of the heal will be, however. We’ve already been exposed to this with Prayer of Mending, but the Smite heals are a different beast. I haven’t had any problems though, it heals the ally close to the enemy I’m smiting, most likely they are taking damage and need a heal.
The one main issue that I am seeing with Disc in PVP is the amount of opportunities your opponents will have to silence your holy spells. Smite still takes a while to cast even with the talents I have chosen. Becoming an expert at “fake-casting” and utilizing Pain Suppression and Power Word: Barrier at the right times can be critical.
One last thing I must say, and it pains me to do so. Caster DPS, we need to talk. (I hate this part right here).
I know we have been going together for a while now, but I feel like our lives are moving in different directions. I just have new priorities in my WoW life now and, well, I should just come out and say it: You aren’t going to be getting Power Infusion anymore. I’m sorry. Please don’t be mad. I still care about you and I’ll still give you sweet heals. Also, this doesn’t mean you should start overlooking me when it comes to Focus Magic. Just think of it like Ex-Sex.
Power Infusion is a beautiful, beautiful thing. When selfishly cast on myself I can get 5 stacks of Evangelism super fast and then have a fully stacked Archangel making me an unstoppable healing force. With the buffs from Grace and Weakened Soul, Disc Priests are quite a healing force to be reckoned with.
Let me end by saying that I am, by no means, a Disc Priest expert. These are just my opinions and what is working for me at the moment. I welcome any opinions, comments, criticisms and praise (of course).
I’ll end with one last picture, since we haven’t had much Tranny love around here lately:
