Weekly Lagout

Posted in MMORPG with tags on July 31, 2009 by theerivs

Some Love:

First off this week a friend of mine has passed, his name was Dante. Also another good person,  Gnomer is  going through a rough patch. Let’s keep their families and friends in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you.

Well some fun this week blog wise. Over At Nimayne Speaks, Tamarind thought to start a comment as a letter, and I thought it was funny to kind of continue the thread in the comments section. Nim returned the favor.

I never got on Blog Azeroth. I should probably stop by and visit. Although I love WoW. I don’t want to get pigeon-holed into one game again. Anywho they have an intiative where you remember old azeroth, or vanilla WoW as they call it. I thought what a great idea. I think I will do something. I’ll call it the Moment of Whoa. Where not just WoW, but other games I sat there in awe of the game.  Also this is a great post from this blog, who I just added to my blogroll.

Other then that grinding the pally, blowing stuff on the mage, and waiting for 3.2 to hit.

Moment of Whoa:

I think alot of the games we play we take for granted all the detail designers put into the game. There are tons of moments I stop and just look around and enjoy the level of detail they put in. Like after I clear an instance, I like to just look around and smell the roses.  There are times though that I’m just stricken with awe by things in the game, where I just stop and go…”Whoa” in my best impression of Neo from the Matrix. One of these moments is my first time on the Tram, it was back when WoW was new.  As I travelling in the pipes under the water, I looked out through the pipes and saw a whole microcosm. Like an aquarium, I was struck byt the level of detail in it. I actually hopped off the tram to take a better look. I started wondering. Where does this pipe lay. I wonder if I could find the pipe from the outside, could I look into anyone traveling the Tram.  Later on in my WoW carreer I would be greeted with many such moments…but this is one of the first.

Gaarawarr Gabs has an awesome intreview with Josh Drescher. I urge you to check it out.

Other MMO:

Bioware is trying to keep hush hush. While a fan is really doing a great job in doing some viral marketing for them. The Great Holocron.

I might give DDO Eberron a shot, hell it’s free. Why not?

Awesome moment of the Week.

Thats all I need to say or show. If your a older geek, or nerd, who was around in 1982 and saw the original, just watching the trailer should be getting you excited. I know I am. Yea thats a tent in my pants….Now What?

I saw Tron when I was 10 years old, my grandma took me. She didn’t know what it was all about. I did though, and since then I loved all things computer.

Well that’s it for me…

MY PING SUCKS!….I’m Outta here!

WoW: Click Click Boom!

Posted in MMORPG with tags on July 30, 2009 by theerivs

Ok I’ve been working on my baby pally with some old friends. On the PvP server I was grinding in STV, it’s does my heart glad to see so many 80′s ganking, and causing havoc in STV still. Keep at it, I’ll be back when I’m 80 to return the favor.  Though as nice as it is, it’s work to grind, and keep plugging away.

I needed a break from the grind. So I dusted off the mage, and did a heroic. I whipped out the Arcane spec, and I really went to town. It was really nice to blow stuff up again. I really love the mage. When I’m on the Pally I miss the power, the teleports, my epic flying carpet.

Most of all I miss my guild on my main server. Yeah when I log in, I’m berated like a 2 dollar hooker (all in good fun, and I dish it out too), and their bunch of douchebags…but their my douchebags.

MMO’s for me break down to a couple parts.

1. The people – I like playing with people I somewhat know. On my main server I play with people I’ve gamed with some for over 5 years. Other servers I played with people I work with, or people I know from elsewhere.  I never started completely fresh, knowing nobody at all.

2. The Game-  I think the game has to be good enough to keep my attention for long hours. There has to be a sense of wonderment to it. I have to feel almost a part of the virtual world I play in. I feel that was part of the problem with WAR, and especially AoC. I felt detached.

3. Definable goals- There has to be something I want, something to reach for. In WoW it’s a proto-drake.  In other games I didn’t really have any good goals, and thats why they fell to the wayside.

There’s a few more thing that make a good MMO for me, this is just the basic stuff.

Right now, I slowed down on the mage until 3.2 to comes out so I wouldn’t get burnt out on him, because I know I’ll be running alot of stuff to get my badges. As the patch edges closer though I feel myself chomping at the bit. Cause when it does. I’m locking and loading baby.

General: A little bit of Lust, a whole lotta of Love.

The game world is abuzz with EA’s politically correct snafu. The blogosphere is no exception. Explaining it better then me is Destructive Reach, who is appalled at this, and Syp, who kind of says it’s not EA’s fault, but part of a bigger picture that we as gamers and human’s are missing.

I agree with Syp on this matter. It’s not entirely EA’s fault, but you know what I bet they get more game sales out of it. A game that has lust in it, and or maybe hot babes. Teenage boys, or Men with the mentallity of a teenager will go and scoop this game up toot sweet.

There’s Booth Babes there at this convention, geeks line up to take pictures of it. Why? Because geeks are admiring the aesthetic beauty of a girls costume. No they are lusting after this girl.  So EA calls a spade a spade, I for one wouldn’t condemn then in fact I give them props.

I think alot of people who are condemning EA are avoiding the bigger picture, and feel like morally they need to censure EA for pointing out something that is right under everyones noses, but they refuse to see. I think the lot of them are hypocrites.

That reminds me of a the Harold and Kumar 2. In the movie, there was a scene, it actually struck home. Harold and Kumar call the President a hypocrite. The President responds “Do you like getting hand jobs?”  Harold and Kumar reply, “Yes”  The President then asks, “Do you like giving handjobs?” Harold and Kumar say vehemently, “NO!”  The President goes on to say, “Then your hypocrites. “

Bottomline, Do I think EA was right in what they were doing. No. Do I think the whole Booth Babes idea is stupid, Yes.  Do we really need Hot Babes to hawk games? No.  They are there for one reason only. Sex Sells. Would I like to have my picture surrounded by Booth Babes doing nasty things to me, Heck Yea.  I’m a whiskey drinking, pie-eating guy, and I’m more shallow then the kiddy pool, at low tide. Heck if EA Marketing was hiring, I would put in my resume.

Sam Raimi is directing the World of Warcraft movie. I loved him since Evil Dead. I recently saw Drag Me To Hell, and loved that movie. I just wonder what will Bruce Campbell play, and how is he going to get his Oldsmobile into that movie.

WoW: Looking forward to 3.2

Mage Changes and Thoughts -

  • Arcane Blast: Mana cost reduced by 12%.  – Awesome, anything helping Arcane Mage efficiency. I’m all for
  • Frost Bolt, Cone of Cold, Frost Ward, Ice Armor, Frost Armor, Frost Nova, Ice Lance, and Ice Barrier: The mana cost on these spells has been reduced by approximately 15%.  – Frost is already pretty mana efficient so this is full of Meh
  • Invisibility: Can no longer be interrupted by a hostile action or damage done during the 3-second Fade time, however an invisible mage is still vulnerable to Stun and Silence effects.  – YES!! Better Invis, now I’m really going to be more of a ninja.
  • Mirror Image: Images will no longer trigger the death sound when their time expires.  – It did freak me out seeing myself die.
  • Talents
    • Fire
      • Empowered Fire: In addition to its existing effects, this talent now also grants a 33/67/100% chance to regain 2% of base mana each time the Ignite talent deals damage. – More Mana for Fire, and FFB…Mmm Good
    • Frost
      • Empowered Frostbolt: Instead of increasing critical strike chance by 2/4%, this talent now reduces the cast time of Frostbolt by 0.1/0.2 seconds. – Faster Frostbolts is a good thing.
      • Permafrost: In addition to its existing effects, this talent now also causes the mage’s Chill effects to reduce healing received by the victim by 7/13/20%. – Mortal Strike for Mages….Frost PvPers  rejoice indeed!

Mage Tier-7 2-Piece Bonus: Now grants 25% additional mana from mana gems, down from 40%.  – Well this blows!

There’s alot to 3.2 too much to list here.  Some key points I want to point out.
    - Mount changes, we can now get them at lower levels, and the basic flying mount speed is increased. This has been beaten to death, but I think its a good thing.

    - Emblem changesNow everything will be dropping Emblems of Conquest, well except Coliseaum will be dropping Emblems of Triumph.  – I’m really excited about this. More 5 man farming.

RAID ID can be kept longer to finish a dungeon. This is really cool for people who want to see content, and want more practice.

    - Some needed class tweaking, and some not so needed.  – Making excorcism have a cast time, HULK ANGRY!

    - Resilence changesI hate that stat, I really do. Always have.

Well there you have it. Alot of stuff happening. Overall I’m looking forward to this to see how it pans out.

    Back in Black!

Posted in MMORPG with tags on July 27, 2009 by theerivs

Hey everyone, I’m back. I took a little vacation, or a staycation if you will. To recharge the batteries, etc.etc.  As you know I’m done with WAR. I haven’t really been playing my mage all that much, some people are gone from the guild, others just got the Summertime blues, which means their not playing as much because of Summer activities.

I am playing my Pallie alot more, hit level 36 yesterday, and progressing nicely. Leveling as a Ret Pally, when I hit 40 I hope I have the 1k gold to go Duel spec. Thinking of a Prot spec one spec, then Ret the other.  I really like the Pally class now, so many options and so many get my butt out of the fire tricks.

This week I’m going to try to take a real close look at patch 3.2, and some more things going on in the MMO world, Star Wars, DDO, and many more.

Also I have noticed Star Trek Online, has been very quiet as of late. This worries me.

General MMO: The Age of Fail…err Conan

Posted in MMORPG with tags on July 22, 2009 by theerivs

I’m on vacation so not really posting a whole lot, but some mentioned I should try Age of Conan, or AoC.

I’m going to have to say HELL NO!.  AoC left such a bad taste in my mouth. Well to put it bluntly it is said, “You can polish a turd, and all you would have is a shiny piece of shit”

AoC wasn’t bad for the first 20 levels, and to be honest I liked the Necromancer class. I had a little army of undead, and I had the Whirlwind AOE spell of death. He was a god of PvE, but the PvE sucked, everything was way to segmented. An asston of bugs, graphical as well as game mechanics.

Need I mentioned PvP? It was so bad I dare not mention it.

Unless they send me a free game card, a signed picture of Arnold, and a nude photo of every hot chick in every Conan movie with them asking me to come back to AoC…then I might think about it.

You think you can convince me otherwise? Go ahead and try…

    Weekly Lagout

Posted in MMORPG with tags on July 17, 2009 by theerivs

Ok this is gonna be a short post….cause well I went out late last night, and lets say I should have the title “The Drunkard” in Real Life. Tonight I’m going to Def Leppard/Poison concert with a group of friends. I might not make it out alive.

I’m done. I cancelled. Will I be back. Don’t think so. But never say never. LoTD wasn’t the savior of WAR, i thought it would be.

Still working on my new pally, I got some conflicting ways to level for sure. So I’ll have to read up some more on it.

I’m getting hyped up…..If I get let down..I’m going to get angry, and you wouldn’t like me angry.

    Some Love-

Tobold is taking a break, He’s a good guy and helped me out alot. I wish him the best. I hope he comes back. He was a major influence on my blogging.

Alot of new blogs on my blogroll, check them out too many to list. Some Star Wars ones too.

    Funny of the week:

    It’s not an ordinary rabbit.

    Well see you all…I hope.

WoW: How Rivs Got his Tanking Groove Back

Posted in MMORPG with tags , on July 16, 2009 by theerivs

Like Stella I lost my groove, as a Tank. I use to play as a Warrior alot, until I got burnt out, and switched to the mage. Whom I still love. But I wanted to try something different. Thats why the Reroll as a Pally. So it’s been years since I tanked a mob, well besides Frost Mage Tanking. Running into a group of mobs with Ice Barrier on, Arcane Blasting the whole lot doesn’t count I think.

Well a guildie asked me last night to tank as a pally in Razorfen Kraul.  I use to be a warrior, the playstyle is way different.  I was a little rough around the edges. But when I found my groove, it was some good fun. I miss my warrior of days of old, and being the guy to take a beating.  It was some good fun, and a great learning experience

In the beginning, my hot bars were all jacked up. I didn’t have any tanking abilities on them. I was acting like a scared cat, cause it’s been literally years since I tanked. The guildie the priest was insane funny, he was pulling pigs at one point, and I would pull them off him. I was so surprised that the pally could tank 5 or 6 mobs at a time.   I was like, “Hold on I need mana.”, he was like, “Judgement of Wisdom, Fool!”  The priest helped me out alot to find my tanking groove.

I am only level 27, and retribution specced. So I know I don’t have all the abilities I should for a real Pally tank.  I want to switch to protection spec, but I’m afraid of how is the leveling going to be. I hear protection spec is awesome from some people, but I’m not so sure.

Any tips for a leveling newb Pally?

    SW:TOR: Am I Evil?

Posted in MMORPG with tags on July 15, 2009 by theerivs

darth-maulAs Metallica would say, “Yes I am”

Adam and Eve were kicked out of the Garden of Eden because they ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.  Which means they did not know what good or evil was before then.

In Star Wars: The Old Republic I will be going with the Sith Empire. The Evil Side most would obviously agree, but I wouldn’t let me explain.

In alot of Modern MMO’s, WoW, Aion, SW:TOR, etc…there are usually two factions. One faction is seemingly good, or pretty. One faction is ugly or bad. If the MMO has multiple factions there is usually one side deemed more evil then the rest, like Pirates in Pirates of the Burning Sea.  Some MMO’s cop out saying oh this side isn’t really evil, but they are thrown into the evil lot just by their looks.

Things that are beautiful are associated with good. That which is evil is always ugly. Notice that in movies?  In my experience, Some of the nicest people I known in real life aren’t that good looking, and some of the meanest were prettiest.  I think the question begs to be asked, “What is evil, and good?”

I think those terms are subjective. What is good for me, may be evil to you, and vice versa. I think the most profound effect on my is Raistlin in the Dragonlance Chronicles. He turned to the “evil” side because it allowed him to use knowledge that was forbidden to the “good” side.  So to Raist, evil was good.

Lets take it back to the MMO world and it’s lore. In WoW, you have the Alliance, and the Horde. The Alliance is good? Right? Well they beat up and imprisoned the orcs in concentration like camps, is that actions of a good race? Horde are evil? They believe in honor, and commune with nature. (well before they drank the demons blood, and after they were cured)

In WAR,  Order has Witch Hunters which torture, and harm there victims is that good?  All that Chaos wants is Change, their methods might be dubious, but I don’t think that makes them evil.  I just think they suffer from poor leadership.

Finally lets look at the Sith Empire. They want to put the universe in order, they want power, they want strength. They are ruled by their passions. Is this so bad?  Does this make them evil? I think not.
